The Best Shows You Can See on Broadway Right Now

Image
By Esther Zuckerman Broadway operates in waves. The first comes in the fall when a host of new shows open just before the influx of Christmastime tourists. The second arrives in the spring, as plays and musicals clamor for Tony Awards consideration. That being said: There's truly never a bad time to see some great theater. But what to see? Good thing you're here. We've compiled a list of our favorite productions that debuted within the past three years. Expect updates and changes as more shows come and go. Beetlejuice Opened: April 25, 2019 Cast: Alex Brightman, Sophia Anne Caruso, Kerry Butler, Leslie Kritzer Director: Alex Timbers (Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson, Oh, Hello!) Why it's great: In the battle of the movie adaptation musicals that hit Broadway in 2019, Beetlejuice has gotten the short end of the critical stick. While the New York Times, for instance, lavished praise on Tootsie, it dinged Beetlejuice -- hard. But the ghost with the most offer

5 big-name players primed for a comeback in Major League Baseball

By William Fleitch Sometimes, seasons just go sideways on you. Mike Trout once hit .220 in a season. (Sure, his first season, and in only 135 plate appearances, but still.) Maybe you suffered some nagging injuries. Maybe you had some off-the-field concerns. Maybe it was just one of those years when all the luck went against you. It doesn’t mean your career is over. One year can just be that: one year. At least, that’s what this list of onetime stars who fell on hard times in 2020 are hoping. These are players who once stood atop this sport but came crashing down to earth in '19. They’re not just desperate to get their careers back in track in '20; they’ve got teams absolutely relying on them to do so. Here’s betting these five have plenty of arrows left in their quivers. Here’s betting they leave 2019 long in their rearview mirror. 1. Khris Davis, OF, A’s One of the most remarkable streaks in all of baseball history ended last year. Khris Davis, the prodigious slugger

New York Rangers may need to carry three goalies soon

Image
By Natalina Focarelli Every New York Rangers fan remembers watching a game and being in absolute awe of Henrik Lundqvist. The near-impossible saves that made us all look at each other with our jaws left wide open, only able to articulate a phrase that has become so familiar to us: “Did he really just save that?” There is no doubt that Hank is the King of New York, the backbone of the Rangers for over a decade, and the most reliable skater wearing a Rangers uniform every time he takes the ice. But in today’s reality, the organization is rebuilding, and has shown commitment to this new phase of Rangers hockey by trading long-time fan favorites for young prospects and draft picks over the last two years. The pressure and expectations of rebuilding one of the league’s most famous and long-standing hockey franchises and the aging factor of the 37-year-old netminder who is nearing the end of his 7-year, 8.5 million dollar contract, has divided a fanbase on what they believe is the best

Why Mike Trout is still the best option at the top of fantasy baseball drafts

Image
By Jason Catania Mike Trout has been the consensus best player in baseball for the past several years. But should he be the consensus top pick in fantasy baseball for 2020? Maybe. Maybe not. What is clear, however, is that the Angels superstar and reigning AL MVP is in the conversation, along with fellow stud outfielders Christian Yelich of the Brewers and Ronald Acuña Jr. of the Braves. If you’re picking first overall in your fantasy draft -- and your league uses traditional 5x5 rotisserie scoring categories -- you're certainly going to consider Trout. So here are the cases for and against taking him No. 1. Why you should take Trout with the first pick Wait, you mean aside from that whole best-player-in-the-game point? Because Trout essentially has held that title since his first full MLB campaign in 2012. Hmmm. OK, we'll dig a little deeper, if you insist. Since fantasy performance ultimately comes down to a player's numbers, let's look at Trout's. He

Elton John on the 'Lion King' remake: It's 'a huge disappointment'

By Nate Day Elton John is not happy with the newest version of "The Lion King." John, who wrote the music for " The Lion King " in the '90s, spoke with British GQ about his upcoming memoir, "Me," and his thoughts on Disney's remake of the 1994 classic. "The new version of The Lion King was a huge disappointment to me because I believe they messed the music up," John, 72, said. "Music was so much a part of the original and the music in the current film didn’t have the same impact." He continued: "The magic was lost." John was also not heavily involved in the music for the new film, which he found upsetting. "I wish I’d been invited to the party more, but the creative vision for the film and its music was different this time around and I wasn’t really welcomed or treated with the same level of respect," he said. A new song, "Never Too Late," was composed by John for the film, which play
